Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters Australian Tour February 2018

By | News and Announcements

PINK Floyd founding member and bass player Roger Waters will tour Australian arenas next year for what will likely be the last time playing the songs from the band that made him famous.

After selling out shows in the US, Waters will bring his acclaimed and highly political Us + Them tour to Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane with a three-hour arena spectacular featuring hi-tech screens, lasers and their famous floating, inflatable pig, this time with a Donald Trump twist.

The now-defunct Pink Floyd is one of the most successful bands of all time, with more than 250 million albums sold, and with a band reunion nigh on impossible, the tour is being billed as the last chance to see the many of the classic songs performed live.

Waters, who turns 74 next week, left Pink Floyd in acrimonious circumstances in 1985 but in recent years he has embraced the hits and albums he helped to create.

His past two tours have played revered albums Dark Side Of the Moon and The Wall in full — the latter becoming the most successful solo tour ever.

The Us + Them tour features a set that dips heavily into the Pink Floyd catalogue, as well as including tracks from his recent ARIA top ten solo release Is This the Life We Really Want?, his first rock album in 25 years.

The tour takes its name from a track from Dark Side Of the Moon — the third highest selling album of all time — and arises from Waters’ dissatisfaction with the state of the world and particularly President Trump. The show seethes with anti-Trump rhetoric and calls to resist, which has seen the outspoken and unapologetic Waters trolled and threatened on social media.

Eric Clapton rock and blues guitarist – singer and songwriter

By | News and Announcements

Eric Patrick Clapton, CBE (born 30 March 1945), is an English rock and blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He is the only three-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: once as a solo artist and separately as a member of the Yardbirds and Cream. Clapton has been referred to as one of the most important and influential guitarists of all time. Clapton ranked second in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” and fourth in Gibson’s “Top 50 Guitarists of All Time”. He was also named number five in Time magazine’s list of “The 10 Best Electric Guitar Players” in 2009.

Clapton received an acoustic Hoyer guitar, made in Germany, for his thirteenth birthday, but the inexpensive steel-stringed instrument was difficult to play and he briefly lost interest.  Two years later Clapton picked it up again and started playing consistently.  Clapton was influenced by the blues from an early age, and practised long hours to learn the chords of blues music by playing along to the records.  He preserved his practice sessions using his portable Grundig reel-to-reel tape recorder, listening to them over and over until he felt he’d got it right.

In the mid-1960s Clapton left the Yardbirds to play with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. Immediately after leaving Mayall, Clapton formed the power trio Cream with drummer Ginger Baker and bassist Jack Bruce, in which Clapton played sustained blues improvisations and “arty, blues-based psychedelic pop”. Furthermore, he formed blues rock band Blind Faith with Baker, Steve Winwood, and Ric Grech. For most of the 1970s Clapton’s output bore the influence of the mellow style of J. J. Cale and the reggae of Bob Marley. His version of Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff” helped reggae reach a mass market. Two of his most popular recordings were “Layla”, recorded with Derek and the Dominos; and Robert Johnson’s “Crossroads”, recorded with Cream. Following the death of his son Conor in 1991, Clapton’s grief was expressed in the song “Tears in Heaven”, which was featured on his Unplugged album.

Clapton has been the recipient of 18 Grammy Awards, and the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. In 2004 he was awarded a CBE at Buckingham Palace for services to music.  In 1998, Clapton, a recovering alcoholic and drug addict, founded the Crossroads Centre on Antigua, a medical facility for recovering substance abusers.

Slipknot heavy metal band describes its sound as “metal metal”

By | News and Announcements
Slipknot is an American heavy metal band from Des Moines, Iowa. The band was founded in September 1995 by percussionist Shawn Crahan and drummer Joey Jordison. After several lineup changes in its early years, the band settled on nine members for more than a decade: Corey Taylor, Mick Thomson, Jim Root, Paul Gray, Craig Jones, Sid Wilson, Shawn Crahan, Chris Fehn and Joey Jordison. Gray died on May 24, 2010, and was replaced from 2011–2014 by former guitarist Donnie Steele. Jordison left the band on December 12, 2013. Steele left during the recording sessions for .5: The Gray Chapter. The band found replacements in Alessandro Venturella on bass and Jay Weinberg on drums. After the departure of Jordison, as of December 2015 the only founding member in the current lineup is percussionist Crahan; the other remaining members of Slipknot have been members since the release of the band’s 1999 eponymous debut album.
Slipknot is well known for its attention-grabbing image, aggressive style of music, and energetic and chaotic live shows.

Slipknot is considered a nu metal band. The band’s members prefer to distance themselves musically from other nu metal bands such as Korn and Limp Bizkit. Slipknot describes its sound as “metal metal” and regards the link to nu metal as coincidental and a result of nu metal’s emergence being concurrent with that of Slipknot. The band’s sound typically features a heavily down-tuned guitar setup, a large percussive section, samples, and turntables. Using a variety of vocal styles, the music typically features growled vocals, screaming, backing vocals, as well as melodic singing. The band has continually experimented with its sound, most notably developing tracks led by acoustic guitars and melodic singing that first appeared on Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses).

Slipknot’s lyrics are generally very aggressive; they sometimes include profanity while exploring themes such as darkness, nihilism, anger, disaffection, love, misanthropy, and psychosis. They often draw upon topics including the music industry, politics, personal strife, and reflection, among others. Rick Anderson of Allmusic said, “those lyrics that are discernible are not generally quotable on a family website”. On Vol. 3, Taylor deliberately avoided using profanity in response to claims he relied on it. The album All Hope is Gone saw a change to a more standard metal style that includes elements of groove metal, death metal, and thrash metal. The band has also been considered alternative metal.

The band rapidly rose to success following the release of their eponymous debut album in 1999. The 2001 follow-up album, Iowa, although darker in tone, made the band more popular. After a brief hiatus, Slipknot returned in 2004 with Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses), before going on another hiatus and returning in 2008 with its fourth album, All Hope Is Gone, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. After another long hiatus, Slipknot released its fifth studio album, .5: The Gray Chapter, in 2014. The band has released a live album titled 9.0: Live, a compilation album titled Antennas to Hell, and four live DVDs.

Motorhead were an English rock band formed in 1975

By | News and Announcements

Motörhead were an English rock band formed in June 1975 by bassist, singer, and songwriter Ian Fraser “Lemmy” Kilmister, who was the sole constant member, guitarist Larry Wallis and drummer Lucas Fox. The band are often considered a precursor to, or one of the earliest members of, the new wave of British heavy metal, which re-energised heavy metal in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Though several guitarists and drummers have played in Motörhead, most of their best-selling albums and singles feature the work of “Fast” Eddie Clarke on guitar and Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor on drums.

Motörhead released 23 studio albums, 10 live recordings, 12 compilation albums, and five EPs over a career spanning 40 years. Usually a power trio, they had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades, and particularly No Sleep ’til Hammersmith cemented Motörhead’s reputation as a top-tier rock band. The band are ranked number 26 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.  As of 2016, they have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.

Motörhead are typically classified as heavy metal, and their fusion of punk rock into the genre helped to pioneer speed metal and thrash metal. Their lyrics typically covered such topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse, and, most famously, gambling, the latter theme being the focus of their hit song “Ace of Spades”.

Although Lemmy has been credited with being part of various musical scenes, thrash metal or speed metal in the main, from the mid 1970s onward, he stated very clearly, when asked the question, that he plays Rock and Roll. He has said that they had more of an affiliation with Punk Rockers than with the so-called Heavy Metal scene; Motörhead having evolved out of the London mid-1970s Punk era.

Lemmy died on 28 December 2015 after being initially diagnosed with an undisclosed aggressive form of cancer, which was later revealed as prostate cancer, and heart failure, after which drummer Mikkey Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell both confirmed that Motörhead would not continue as a band.

Alex (Malcolm McDowell), the main character, is a charismatic, antisocial delinquent whose interests include classical music (especially Beethoven), rape, and what is termed “ultra-violence”. He leads a small gang of thugs (Pete, Georgie, and Dim), whom he calls his droogs  The film chronicles the horrific crime spree of his gang, his capture, and attempted rehabilitation via controversial psychological conditioning. Alex narrates most of the film in Nadsat, a fractured adolescent slang composed of Slavic (especially Russian), English, and Cockney rhyming slang.

Singer Glen Campbell died aged 81 on 8th August 2017…R.I.P.

By | News and Announcements

The Wichita Lineman hitmaker, who released his final album, Adios, earlier this year (17), had been battling Alzheimer’s disease for years before his death on Tuesday (08Aug17), and his family admitted him to a hospice last year (16) when he became a danger to himself and others.

Speaking of his battle with the memory robbing condition in June, 2016, his wife Kim confessed the country legend had lost the ability to speak and no longer recognised family members.

“He is content and cheerful…,” Kim, his wife of 35 years, told U.S. news show Access Hollywood Live. “He’s kinda in his own little world but he sings to himself a lot.

“He has complete aphasia; he doesn’t understand language and he can’t communicate verbally. But he understands the universal language of love and smiles and kisses and hugs… And he enjoys dessert.”

Glen Campbell arrives at the 2012 CMT Music Awards

The Rhinestone Cowboy singer was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2011 and continued touring until 2014, when he was moved into a long-term care community near his Nashville, Tennessee home.

Campbell’s career spanned six decades and he sold over 45 million records.

2004 CMA Music Festival Nashville

Born in Billstown, Arkansas, Glen was one of 12 kids in a sharecropping family. He picked up the guitar as a child and became a big fan of jazz musician Django Reinhardt.

Campbell dropped out of school at the age of 14 and moved to Wyoming to perform with a musician uncle. He moved to Los Angeles and became part of session group the Wrecking Crew, performing on hits like the Byrds’ Mr. Tambourine Man, Elvis Presley’s Viva Las Vegas, and You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling by the Righteous Brothers.

In 1964, Campbell stood in for Brian Wilson after he suffered a nervous breakdown on tour with the Beach Boys.

He found solo success thanks to encouragement from Wilson with a cover of Buffy Sainte-Marie’s Universal Soldier, and scored a massive hit in 1967 with songwriter Jimmy Webb’s By the Time I Get to Phoenix.

The two also collaborated on Galveston, Gentle on My Mind, and Wichita Lineman, which was Campbell’s first top 10 hit.

In 1968, Campbell guest hosted the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and he was such a hit he landed his own variety show, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, which he hosted from 1969 until 1972.

Glen also found fame as a movie star after John Wayne cast him in cowboy classic True Grit.

But his run of good luck ran out in the early 1970s as the hits dried up and his show was cancelled. He bounced back in 1975 with Rhinestone Cowboy, the song that was to become his signature tune.

Campbell, who was married four times, struggled with alcoholism and cocaine addiction throughout the late 1970s and 1980s – and he was arrested in 2003 for a hit-and-run incident. The singer pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident while drunk, and spent 10 days in jail.

Campbell was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2005.
